BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-amino-acid peptide fragment modeled on a sequence found in human gastric juice. In laboratory and animal research, it has been studied for its apparent ability to promote angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) and support the repair of tendon, ligament, muscle, and gastrointestinal tissue.
Proposed mechanisms include upregulation of growth factor receptors involved in tissue repair (such as VEGFR2), modulation of the nitric oxide system, and interactions with the gut-brain axis. Most of this mechanistic evidence comes from cell-culture and rodent models rather than human trials.
